Aim: The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work under supervision as a security officer performing practical security duties and procedures and responding to security situations in a variety of settings including static and the retail industry.

Participant Profile: Course is suitable for those who require a formal qualification and skills to work in the security industry.

Duration: 4 days (usually 1 day per week) or equivalent contact delivery days in a classroom setting. Learners will be required to complete work outside of class time.

Credit Value: 15 Credits


Some of the learning outcomes include:

  1. Explain the legislation, regulations and standards governing the provision of a private security service to include reference to the Private Security Services legislation, relevant national and international standards and the role of the Private Security Authority
  2. Explain the role of private security services in relation to other agencies which deal with crime and loss prevention
  3. Distinguish between legal codes and practices relating to the role of the security officer to include – criminal and civil law, rights of the individual, health and safety legislation, equality egislation and security industry licensing requirements and relevant national and international standards
  4. Explain the status of representatives of authorised bodies entering premises to include a member of An Garda Siochana, fire officer, health and safety inspector, representative of the security industry regulatory body


Entry Requirement: Minimum of Level 3 certificate standard of education. Strong interest or working in the security industry. A strong level of spoken and written English required.
Assessment: Assignment 20% Skills Demonstration 40% Examination 40% Learners will receive assignment briefs and guidelines on completing these assessments.
Tutor Profile: All tutors are highly qualified and experienced.
Support: A range of accommodations and supports are available according to specific learner needs. One to one and email support available from tutors throughout the course.
Resources: Learners receive a comprehensive resource pack that can be used as a reference during and after the course.

Transfer/progression: Successful completion enables the learner to transfer to programmes leading to other certificates where this component is a mandatory or an elective requirement at Level 4 & 5.
