Course Information:

Aim: The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to ensure that each child’s learning, development and well-being is facilitated through the provision of opportunities and experiences having regard to the age and stage of development of the child.

Participant Profile: Course is suitable for those who require a formal qualification and skills to work in a childcare capacity.

Duration:  Classroom – 4 days (usually 1 day per week) in a classroom setting. Learners will be required to complete work outside of class time.
Distance Learning – Commence at a time suits you and work at your own pace. Full tutor support available throughout.

Status: Mandatory Minor component

Credit Value: 15 Credits towards 120 credits in Early Childhood Care & Education Level 5 award 5M2009

Programme Outcomes:

Some learning outcomes of the component include:

  1. Outline the types, stages patterns and purposes of children’s play
  2. Describe a range of theories of play in the context of children’s education to include Psychoanalytic theories (Freud, Winnicott) and Constructivist theories (Piaget, Vygotsky)
  3. Evaluate the role of the adult in children’s play
  4. Explore a child lead approach to meeting the play and educational requirements of children
  5. Describe different approaches to curriculum development and implementation in the ECCE setting
  6. Assess the value of equipment, materials, play spaces, both indoors and outdoors in the ECCE setting
  7. Use a range of reading and storytelling techniques appropriate to different stages of children’s development and cultural background
  8. Select relevant play activities and materials appropriate to children’s interest and stage of development and cultural background

OTHER INFORMATION:

Entry Requirement: Minimum of Level 4 certificate standard of education or childcare experience. A strong level of spoken and written English required.
Assessment: Assignments 60% Skills Demonstration 40%
Learners will receive assignment briefs and guidelines on completing these assessments.
Tutor Profile: All tutors are highly qualified and experienced Childcare experts.
Support: A range of accommodations and supports are available according to specific learner needs. One to one and email support available from tutors throughout the course.
Resources: Learners receive a comprehensive resource pack that can be used as a reference during and after the course.

Transfer/progression: Successful completion enables the learner to transfer to programmes leading to other certificates where this component is a mandatory or an elective requirement at Level 5 or 6.

    Hi, I was wondering how long does this online course take? I am assuming that the skills demo is actually work experience in this field? And that the crèche or Montessori manager assesses the student? When can I start? Is there an exam? Do I need to attend any classes or is it totally online?
