The purpose of this award is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence to work independently and under supervision in a range of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) settings and/or to progress to higher education and training.

Course Structure

Entry Level
Leaving Certificate standard or appropriate QQI Qualification or equivalent. Mature Applicants with relevant life and work experience. English Language Proficiency Test where deemed appropriate.

Assessment
A combination of module appropriate assessment procedures will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this early Childhood Care and Education course. These methods will include a combination of final written examinations and continuous assessment processes such as assignments, collection of work, learner records, projects and skills demonstration.

Work Experience
The modules outlined above are complemented and consolidated through practical work experience. Work experience is a mandatory module for this award; therefore, students should be aware that they will be required to carry out 120 hours work experience outside of scheduled class time in order to satisfy the requirements of the FETAC work experience module. It is recommended that each
student should secure a work experience placement in their locality that does not conflict with class time or their own personal/work commitments prior to commencing the course to alleviate any pressure once the course has commenced.

Awards
On Successful completion of all 8 Modules Learners will be awarded QQI
Level 5 Early Childhood Care and Education (Major Award) 5M2009
For any one of the 8 Modules – Learners will receive a Minor award from QQI for each module that they successfully complete.

Further Education
Early childhood care and education level 6, ECCE with Montessori
Level 6, Early Years Degree programme in a third level college.

A day on Manual Handling will also be organised – Special rate of €60 for learners booked onto this Major Award!! (Usual cost €80 per day)
A workshop on CPR children will also be organised at a cost of €50 per person

Learner receives full support from experienced course tutor, one to one feedback on assignments, support by text and email and informal progress reports.

Garda Clearance
You will be required to attend minimum 15 days work experience as part of your training in a child care facility. Garda Clearance is required to work in a care setting and Barrow Training can apply for this for you at the beginning of courser. It can take up to 12 weeks for clearance to process so please apply as early as possible.
There is a cost of €12.50 to receive clearance.

Protection for Enrolled Learners (PEL)

In the event that we cease to provide the programme, learners are protected  by our PEL arrangement with 2 alternate providers (Part 6 of the Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012. Learners will either be transferred to another similar course or receive their money back. In this case, learners must be aware that learner data will be shared with alternate provider and QQI.
